Who are we?
Building on a 30-year tradition of excellence in education for capable learning disabled students, Norbel School welcomed its first high school freshman class in 2000. Today, Norbel High School continues to deliver a traditional yet unique educational environment. Norbel High School's curriculum is based on Maryland State Department of Education standards, and weaves necessary accommodations into the classroom setting.
The school provides a nurturing, yet challenging learning environment that ensures the academic success of each of its students. Using multiple teaching methods and integrating interpersonal skills development into individualized programs, the curriculum is designed to meet the needs of children who may have difficulty in a mainstream school system. A qualified faculty encourages each student to develop his or her abilities and talents to their highest potential.
Norbel High School prepares its students for their next step in life, whether continuing their education or entering the workforce. Norbel helps children understand how they learn best, how they can take advantage of their strengths and how they can fulfill their dreams. Most Norbel graduates traditionally pursue post-secondary education in two-year or four-year colleges. Others utilize their strengths and talents to pursue vocations or career development programs. Whatever path they follow, Norbel graduates take with them a strong foundation to meet life's challenges with confidence and determination. |
How are we unique?
- Teaching beyond the textbooks
Norbel integrates an interpersonal skills program into the school day, so that our students learn self-advocacy skills that are necessary for the business and educational world. Seniors participate
in an internship program, where they can gain an important understanding of the work environment.
- Individualized experiences
All students learn differently. At Norbel, our small class size and low student to teacher ratio allows us to deliver an individualized curriculum, unique to each student. Academic and social supports are built into the curriculum and the classroom setting, so that students can meet with optimal success.
- Additional support
Norbel's team approach includes administration, faculty, support staff, parents and students to develop both academic and interpersonal skills goals. Each Norbel High School student is assigned an advisor who meets with the student to monitor and assist the student to meet personal and academic objectives.
